Biographical History

Alpheus Cutler (1784-1864) was a prominent leader in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and founder of The Church of Jesus Christ in Ohio, Illinois and Iowa.

Alpheus Cutler was born on February 29, 1784 in Plainfield, Cheshire, New Hampshire to Knight Cutler and Elizabeth Boyd. Cutler married Lois Gifford Lathrop on November 17, 1808 in Labanon, Grafton, New Hampshire and in 1833 he and his family were baptized into the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. He later also married Sarah Cox, Luana Beebe, and Margaret Carr in Nauvoo, Illinois. While living in Kirtland, Ohio with the Saints, Cutler attended School of the Prophets and assisted with the Kirtland Temple construction. In Nauvoo, he was a member of the Nauvoo Temple construction committee. Cutler also served on Joseph Smith's Council of Fifty and was a missionary among the Native Americans. On April 20, 1851 Cutler was excommunicated from the Church and in 1853 he founded the Church of Jesus Christ in Iowa. Cutler died on August 10, 1864 in Manti, Fremont, Iowa.

Scope and Contents

Photocopies of handwritten and typewritten letters. These items were written in response to inquiries by Kenneth D. Wright of Libertyville, Illinois, on the nature of the Church of Jesus Christ (Cutlerites). Three of the letters were written by Amy L. Whiting. The remaining two items were composed by R. J. Fletcher and Edna Fletcher.
