Biography

Rewi Alley was born in New Zealand on October 8, 2018. He served overseas in the First World War. After returning to New Zealand from the war, he left to witness the Chinese revolution in 1926. He arrived on April 21, 1927. While in China he sought to improve the conditions of workers and helped to develop the Chinese Industrial Cooperatives with the slogan of “Gung Ho,” or work together. Part of his work with the Chinese Industrial Cooperatives included setting up training schools across China. Alley served as headmaster from 1945-1949 for one school in Shandan. He helped to revive the organization in the 80s. The New Zealand and Chinese governments recognized Alley for his contributions in China before and after his death on December 27, 1987.

Scope and Contents Photographs taken by or collected by Helen Foster Snow during her time as a photojournalist in China during the rise of the Chinese Communist Party. Photographs dated 1970 and later are mainly from Helen’s trips back to China, one of which was with Tim Considine in 1978, and many of which are slides.
