Biography

John Serge Bennion (1953-) is a professor of English at Brigham Young University.

John Serge Bennion was born in Salt Lake City, Utah in 1953. He grew up in Vernon, Utah, attending Tooele junior and high schools. He served a mission for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints in the Navajo Nation. Upon completing his mission, Bennion went on to receive a bachelor's degree in English with a certificate in secondary teaching from Brigham Young University. He married Karla on June 10, 1977. Bennion taught at Sanpete Junior High and Juab Middle School where he worked while earning his MA degree from Brigham Young University. In 1984, the family moved to Houston for five years while he completed his PhD in Literature and Creative Writing. In 1989, Bennion and his family returned to Utah where he joined the BYU faculty as an English professor. He writes novels, short fiction, and essays on the Western Utah desert. In 2021, Bennion received the Lifetime Achievement Award from The Association for Mormon Letters.
