Biography

Broadbent H. Smith (1920-2010) was a professor of chemistry at Brigham Young University.

Broadbent H. Smith was born July 21, 1920, in Snowflake, Arizona to Hyrum Broadbent and Lorana Smith. Broadbent received his B.S. degree in chemistry and mathematics in 1942 from Brigham Young University. On September 9, 1942, he married Katherine Mary Miller in the Salt Lake Temple. Broadbent received his doctorate degree in organic chemistry in 1946 and did post-doctoral research in physical organic chemistry at Harvard University. He began teaching chemistry at BYU in 1947, serving as department chair from 1955 to 1958, and retiring after 38 years. Broadbent passed away January 19, 2010, in Provo, Utah.
