Biography
John Lyon 1803-1889, was a Mormon poet in the 19th century.
John Lyon, known as one of the most prominent poets in Mormon history, was born on March 4, 1830 to parents Janet McArthur and Thomas Lyon in Lanarkshire, Scotland, United Kingdom. He began his religious search in the baptist faith but eventually was baptized into the church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints in March of 1844. He Married his wife Janet Thompson on February 23 1826. He traveled with his wife and 5 children into the United States in 1853. He then took Caroline Holland as his second wife. He was known as a poet for his church (The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints). He worked for many newspapers in Utah throughout the 19th century. He made many religious poems and LDS papers allowed his poetry to be published throughout the United states. He then published his poetry book “The Harp of Zion”. He died on Nov. 28 1889 in Salt Lake City Utah.
