Powell, John Wesley, 1834-1902

Biographical History

Powell was born in Mount Morris, New York, in 1834. His family moved westward to Jackson, Ohio, then Walworth County, Wisconsin, before settling in Illinois in rural Boone County. He studied at Illinois College, Wheaton College and Oberlin College. He enlisted in the Union Army as a topographer and military engineer. During the Civil War he served first with the 20th Illinois Volunteers. On November 28, 1861, Powell took a brief leave to marry his cousin Emma Dean Powell. After leaving the Army, Powell took the post of professor of geology at Illinois Wesleyan University. From 1867 Powell led a series of expeditions into the Rocky Mountains and around the Green and Colorado rivers. He died September 23, 1902.

Albumen print stereograph by Hillers of John Wesley Powell with the Ute woman Tau-ruv, taken in the Uinta Valley, Utah around 1874. It is from the "Indians of the Colorado Valley" series entitled "The Mirror Case." It was printed for the U.S. Topographical and Geological Survey of the Colorado River of the West by J.W. Powell and A.H. Thompson.

Collection includes ten photographs of the dedication of the Powell Monument, dedicated to the memory of the Powell Expedition's exploration of the Colorado River. Photographs date to around 1918, and include images of various dignitaries.
