Photocopies of handwritten letters. The materials were addressed to James' son, Daniel MacKintosh in Salt Lake City, Utah. The items were authored by James and his brother, J. MacKintosh. Each of the letters was written in Scotland. The MacKintosh brothers write to Daniel with the intention of showing him the errors in the Mormon religion and to discuss how children should be raised.

Handwritted and signed letter dated 5 April 1854. The item was addressed to "the acting secretary of the P.E. Company." MacKintosh presents summaries of financial transactions conducted by the company. The company was designed to provide financial support for Mormons emigrating to Utah.

Scope and Contents Handwritten and signed letter to Caine in St. Louis, Missouri regarding various matters for the Mormon newspaper, including paying a debt to David Nicholson and purchasing paper stock with an enclosed draft (check). The letter is in MacKintosh's hand with editor Orson Hyde's name included. MacKintosh refers to Hyde's absence from the newspaper and Hyde's expected return in the fall; he thanks Caine for his unexplained "cooperation" in Pottawatamie; and urges Caine to raise the difference, if...
