Biography

In 1916, Simon Bamberger ran for the office of governor of the state of Utah; Bamberger was the first non-member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, the first Democrat and the only Jew ever to seek that office; b. Hesse-Darmstadt, Germany, 1846. He emigrated to the U.S. in 1861; merchant, banker, and mine-owner in Salt Lake City. Born Feb. 27, 1846, Eberstadt, Hesse-Darmstadt, Germany and died Oct. 6, 1926.
