Biographical History

Robert L. Johnson (1819-1901) was a pioneer for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, a farmer, and an ecclesiastical leader in Utah.

Robert Lewis Johnson was born in London, Canada to Edward Johnson and Sarah Brown on August 17, 1819. He was baptized February 22, 1842 and ordained a high priest by Orson Hyde. In 1850 Johnson arrived in Utah, and in 1860 he was called by Brigham Young to help establish Fountain Green, Utah. He farmed and operated both a store and hotel in the town, and he served as bishop of the Fountain Green Ward from 1861 to 1884.

Robert L. Johnson died on June 13, 1901 in Fountain Green, Utah.

Collection consists of a forty-nine page minute book in which Robert L. Johnson recorded the proceedings of meetings called and carried out while Johnson was the bishop of a Fountain Green Branch. The minutes, which were kept in detail, were taken between 1865 and 1866. Also included in the collection is a photocopy of the minute book.

Collection consist of twenty-five letters and documents dated from 1858 to 1871 and are to, from, or about Johnson as a bishop of the Fountain Green Branch in Fountain Green, Utah. Several letters to him are from his family in Missouri, many relate to his work as a Mormon bishop from other Mormons in Manti, Great Salt Lake City, Provo, and Nephi. Some documents relate to the operation of Church courts, information on an impending government survey of the territory, and Church tithing.
