Biography

Barton O. Aylesworth (1860-1933) was an American college administrator and minister.

Barton Orville Aylesworth was born on September 5, 1860 in Athens, Illinois. He studied at Eureka College, and served as a minister in Illinois and Iowa following his graduation. While serving in Atlantic, Illinois he married Georgia M. Shores, and they had one son, Merlin H. Aylesworth. In 1889 he was selected to as president of Drake University in Des Moines, Iowa, where he served until 1897. After leaving Drake he moved west and became the pastor of the Central Christian Church in Denver, Colorado. He returned to education in 1899 when he was appointed the president of the State Agricultural College in Fort Collins, serving until 1909. Aylesworth passed away on July 1, 1933 in Denver, Colorado.

Typewritten and signed letter, dated 15 Oct. 1894, and addressed to Barton O. Aylesworth. Bates writes that "the most satisfactory notices" of his writings can be found in magazines. Also included is a clipping from a magazine which describes Bates and his work. With these materials is the envelope in which the letter was sent to Aylesworth.

Campbell responds to Aylesworth's request for biographical information and tells him where he can find such information. Handwritten and signed letter, addressed to Barton O. Aylesworth, dated 20 Nov. 1894, and composed in Washington, DC. Alden writes he received a forwarded letter from his mother, Isabella Macdonald Alden, an American author. This missive was written by Aylesworth requesting information on Isabella Alden. Raymond Alden responds to the inquiry and informs Aylesworth where he might find published information on his mother.

Scope and Contents Handwritten and signed letter, dated 13 Nov. 1894, and addressed to Barton O. Aylesworth of Fort Collins, Colorado. Brooks responds to Aylesworth's request for biographical information by stating, "I don't like these personal questions for I cannot answer them satisfactorily." The envelope in which the letter was sent is with the collection. Also included is a handwritten and signed note dated 28 May 1892 in which Brooks states that the manuscript, "Take a Walk," is "Just the thing." ...

Handwritten and typewritten letters, signed by Bates. One handwritten item is addressed to Barton O. Aylesworth and responds to a request for autobiographical data. One handwritten letter is addressed to a Mr. Flynn and regards their mutual love for American literature. Also included is one handwritten verse of the poem "America the Beautiful" which was written by Bates. Also with the collection is a typed letter from Bates to Flynn regarding a recent song the latter wrote.

Two handwritten and signed letters and dated 15 Oct. 1886 and 12 Sept. 1894. The earlier missive is addressed to Ben W. Austin and expresses Beers' gratitude for being elected a member of th Northwestern Literary and Historical Society. The letter of 1894 is addressed to Barton O. Aylesworth and gives information on where biographical materials may be found on him.

Scope and Contents

Two letters and the envelope in which at least one of the items was sent. Chamberlain responds to a letter sent to him by Barton O. Aylesworth requesting biographical information. Chamberlain writes his response on the letter Aylewsorth sent to him. Also included is a handwritten and signed letter by Chamberlain, dated 18 March 1902, and addressed to Aylesworth. Chamberlain apologizes for not responding to Aylesworth's enquiry sooner.
