Biography

Charles Kelly (1889-1971) was a writer of Western history, a collector of Western lore, and a historian.

Charles Kelly was born on February 3, 1889 in Cedar Springs, Michigan to parents Alfred and Flora Lepard Kelly. He attended Valparaiso University in Indiana where he never finished a degree but instead went to explore the country. He later married Harriett Greener. Charles worked throughout his life as a printer and painter, including time as a partner for the Western Printing Company until 1940. He was also a historian of the American West and a collector of Western lore, focusing primarily on the western salt desert of Utah and Nevada. Charles later settled and died in Salt Lake City, Utah in April of 1971..
