Biography

Thomas Beard (1836-1917) was a Mormon coal miner, florist, and gardener.

Thomas Beard was born on December 14, 1836 to Thomas Beard and Ellen Elizabeth Clark in Whaley Bridge, Derbyshire, England. He converted to the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints on Febuary 10, 1852 in England. In 1857 he married Mary Ann Openshaw Simister, with whom he had three children. Their family immegrated to Utah in 1862 and settled in Coalville. He then married Mahaleth Abiah Tanner, with whom he had nine children. While in Utah, he opened the Wasatch coal mine and was also a florist and gardener. He was a high priest who served as the president of the 27th quorum of seventies in Coalville, City councilman for two years, and as a school trustee. Beard died on December 23, 1917 in Coalville, Utah.
