Biographical History

George Teasdale (1831-1907) was an apostle of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

George Teasdale was born December 8, 1831 in London, England to William Russell Teasdale and Harriet Henrietta Tidey. He studied in public schools, afterward becoming an architect, surveyor, and later upholsterer. He was baptized into the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in 1852. The following year he married Emily Emma Brown (1831-1874), and they had four children. In 1857 he began full-time service in the Church, working in England and Scotland. In 1861 he emigrated with his family to Utah, where he worked as a teacher and storekeeper. He worked first for Brigham Young, but in 1867 he was made head of the General Tithing Store. He was then called to serve as a missionary, first to England (1868-1869) and then to the Southern States (1875-1876).

After his return to Utah he received successively more responsibility in the Church. In 1876 he was appointed president of the Juab Stake, moving to Nephi, Utah. While there he served in the Utah Legislature in 1880 and 1882. In 1882 he was called to be an apostle, and in 1883 was sent on a mission to Indian Territory. In 1886 he left to serve as mission president in the European Mission, and in 1891 as mission president in Mexico. Over the course of his service as a church officer he took a number of plural wives, including Mary Lauretta Picton (1877), Matilda Ellen Picton (1878), Eunice A. Ivins (ca. 1880), and Letitia Thomas (1900). Teasdale died on June 9, 1907 in Salt Lake City, Utah.
