Biographical History

Amos N. Merrill (1875-1953) was an education professor in Utah.

Amos Newlove Merrill was born on March 15, 1875 in Richmond, Utah. After attending both Brigham Young College and the Agricultural College of Utah (now Utah State University), he received a bachelor's degree in science in Logan. After serving as a missionary in England from 1897-1900 in England, he returned to marry Eliza Lewis Drysdale on April 25, 1900. While he spent the first couple of years of their marriage working as a member of the faculty of Brigham Young College as an instructor of Mechanical Tools, he attended the Graduate School of Agriculture at the University of Illinois from 1906-1908 to become a professor of Agriculture in both Brigham Young College and Brigham Young University starting in 1909. From 1921-1922, he returned to Illinois and attended Stanford to get his Ph.D. and was later promoted as the Dean of Brigham Young University. While he worked at BYU from 1910-1953, he was elected to the Utah Board of Education, served as the President of the Utah Education Association, and became a member of both the Utah Academy of Sciences and Letters and Phi Delta Cappa. In addition to this, he published books and papers including "Balanced Wheels" and "Mormon Way of Life." In 1953, he passed away in Provo, Utah.
