Biography

Walter Murray Gibson (1822-1888) was the premier and minister of foreign affairs of Hawaii.

Walter Murray Gibson was born on March 6, 1822, most likely in Kelsey, England. He joined the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in 1860 and was commissioned by Brigham Young to form a colony of saints in the Pacific. During his time in the Pacific he would begin a political career, becoming the premier and minister of foreign affairs of Hawaii. Murray married Rachel Lewis Gibson on July 10, 1838, in South Carolina. They had three children. Murray passed away on January 21, 1888.

Holograph diaries which give daily accounts of activities in Maui, including cabinet meetings, interactions with Claus Spreckels, the financial supporter of Gibson's government, association with King Kalakaua, visits to Mother Marianne of Molokai at the convent at Kakaako on Maui, the Hawaiian revolution of 1887 in which Gibson was ousted from office and exiled, and the breach of promise suit brought against Gibson by Flora St. Clair, whom he had allegedly promised to marry.
