Biography

Dennis Rowley (1938-1996) was an archivist and senior librarian at Brigham Young University.

Edward Dennis Rowley was born August 18, 1938 in Hudson, Colorado, to Edward Arthur Rowley and Mary Staples. On 18 April 1961 he married Consuelo Trujillo in Salt Lake City and they had 3 children. In 1965, Rowley received a B.A. in History from the University of Colorado. In 1970 he earned an M.A. in Latin American History from Case Western Reserve University. He earned a Ph.D. in the History of American Literature from Brigham Young University in 1984. Rowley served in the Colorado National Guard and the United States Army. Prior to coming to BYU, Rowley worked as Archives Assistant at Case Western Reserve University, archivist at University Hospitals of Cleveland, Curator of Maps and Manuscripts for the Wisconsin State Historical Society and University Archivist and Executive Director of Rio Grande Historical Collections at New Mexico State University. In 1973, he became the Curator of Archives and Manuscripts at Harold B. Lee Library. He was also an instructor for archival science in the Department of History, and the School of Library and Information Science. In 1990, he became Manuscripts Accessioner and Processor and Curator of Literary Collections in the Department of Special Collections and Manuscripts until he passed away on 12 August 1996.
