Biographical History

Edwin Smith Hinckley (1868-1929) was a professor and academic administrator in Utah.

Edwin Smith Hinckley was born on July 21, 1868 to Ira N. and Adelaide Hinckley in Cove Fort, Utah. He attended Brigham Young Academy and graduated from their high school and collegiate divisions. He went on to attend the University of Michigan. In 1890, Hinckley married Adeline Henry and had thirteen children. He served two missions, one in Michigan and another in Colorado. Hinckley joined the BYA faculty in 1895 and was the principal of Brigham Young High School from 1904-1909. While working at BYU he held the positions of a counselor to George H. Brimhall, dean of the Church Teachers College, and chief geologist. In 1915 Hinckley retired from BYU and became the superintendent of the state training school in Ogden. Hinckley died on November 15, 1929.
