Biographical history

Parley P. Pratt (1807-1857) was an American religious leader and missionary for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

Parley P. Pratt was born April 12, 1807 in Burlington, New York, to Jared Pratt and Charity Dickinson Pratt. He served as an apostle in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints from 1835 to his death in 1857. Pratt also served in several missions for the Church, including the British Mission (April 1841-October 1842 and October 1846-January 1847); Eastern States Mission (president from December 1844-August 1845); and was the first Latter-day Saint missionary in South America (March 1851-March 1852). It was while serving a mission that Parley P. Pratt was assassinated May 13, 1857, in Alma, Arkansas.

Includes a handwritten diary of Pratt and his wife, Phoebe Sopher Pratt, kept while the Pratts were on a mission for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in South America from 1851 to 1852. Also included are three handwritten letters and eight fragments of manuscripts by Parley P. Pratt. All items date from 1851 to 1855.
