April 10, 1847 in Makó, Hungary; emigrated to the United States in 1864; served in the cavalry; took a job as a reporter for the Westliche Post in St. Louis, Missouri, 1868; elected to the state legislature, 1869; purchased the St. Louis Dispatch and the St. Louis Post, merging the papers to form the St. Louis Post-Dispatch, 1879; purchased the New York World newspaper, 1883; d. October 29, 1911 on his yacht in Charleston Harbor, Charleston, S.C.)
