Biographical History

Castle Hadlock Murphy (1886-1985) was a Latter-day Saint Church leader in Utah and Hawaii.

Castle Hadlock Murphy was born October 1, 1886, in Ogden, Utah, to Emanuel Mark Murphy and Eliza Miranda Hadlock. After high school, Castle completed masonry training in 1906. He had met his wife, Verna Ann Fowler, his junior year of high school, and they were married shortly before serving a mission together for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in the Hawaiian Islands. The couple served for four years in Hawaii, from 1909 to 1913. The family settled in Ogden, Utah, and Castle worked in various occupations, including masonry, clerk of the District Court, and campaign manager for Mayor George E. Browning. In 1928, he became the bishop of the Ogden Second Ward, and in 1929, ran for mayor himself. In 1930, Castle and Verna were called to serve as the President and Matron of the Hawaiian Temple and the Hawaiian Mission for six years. After a two year break, the couple was again called to serve as President and Matron of the Hawaiian temple in 1938, serving until 1941. In 1944, Castle and Verna were called a fourth time to Hawaii to lead the mission and the temple. They were released in 1947. Castle and Verna had five children. Verna passed away in 1959, and Castle passed away on December 20, 1985.
