Biographical History

Steven L. Mayfield (born 1952) is a law enforcement officer and document collector in Utah.

Mayfield was born in 1952 and raised in the San Francisco Bay Area. He served as a Latter-day Saint missionary in Colorado and Nebraska. He worked as a file clerk for the Federal Bureau of Investigation in San Francisco between 1973 and 1977. He then attended college at Weber State College in Ogden, Utah, graduating with a bachelor's degree in police science in 1980. Mayfield worked as a deputy sheriff in Jefferson County, Colorado for nearly ten years before taking a position as a crime scene investigator with the Salt Lake City Police Department, as well as a crime scene photographer, crime lab technician, and self-described "documentation collector." While there, he worked under George Throckmorton, and assisted with a number of cases involving historical documents. He has also been involved with the Mormon History Association, Sunstone, and the Utah State Historical Society.

Scope and Contents

Contains newspapers and clippings of newspapers, mostly from Utah sources, pertaining in some way to the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Newspapers discuss church conferences, leadership, and happenings of the church. Others touch on breakoff cults and criminal reports. Newspapers also discuss the Baptist church and other religions researched by Steven L. Mayfield.
