Biography

Charles Springer (1658-1738) was a Swedish-born resident of Delaware in the early 18th century.

Charles Springer was born November 6, 1658 in Stockholm, Sweden. Springer studied in England and was closely connected with Swedish royalty. While in England he was kidnapped, taken to Virginia, and sold as a labor slave. After five years, he was freed and travelled to a Swedish colony in Delaware. Because of his knowledge of the English language in a colony of Swedish speakers, Springer served as a justice on the New Castle court for 35 years. He was married to Maria Hendricksdotter and Annika Gustaffson. Charles Springer died May 26, 1738, in New Castle, Delaware.
