Biography

S.P. Curtis (1818-1880) was a member of Mormon Battalion Company D and an early member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

Simmons Philander Curtis was born on March 23, 1818 in Sullivan Township, Pennsylvania to Enos Curtis and Ruth Franklin. He was baptized a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in 1832 and later moved to Nauvoo, Illinois in 1841. Simmons was a member of the Mormon Battalion Company D from 1846-1847. He was a member of the Warren Foote western migration company in 1850. Simmons died on April 11, 1880 in Springville, Utah.

Scope and Contents

A collection of five handwritten RSVP letters addressed to Brigham Young and sent from Matthew Caldwell, Reddick Newton Allred, Simmons Philander Curtis, Haden Wells Chruch, and one unknown author. The RSVP letters were written in the month of June of 1863 confirming the guests attending the Mormon Battalion festival in July of that year. Materials dated June 14 to 30, 1863.
