Biography

Harry G. Greaves (1887-1975) immigrated to the United States from Greece, where he served in the United States Army in WWI.

Harry George Greaves (Theoharis Georgios Grivos) was born on July 24, 1887, in Lávkos, Magnesia, Greece to Georgios Ioannis Grivos and Hariklia Demitriou Malamati. Harry apprenticed as a carpenter at age 14 and immigrated to the United States around age twenty. He registered for military service in 1917 and served in the United States Army as a private from 1917 to 1919 and was stationed in Germany. He was baptized into the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in 1918 while serving in the Army in California. Throughout his time serving in the military, he wrote to Sarah Smith. After he returned, they were married on October 2, 1919, in Snowflake, Arizona, and they had six children. The family lived in Snowflake, Arizona, and later Salt Lake City, Utah where Harry worked as a carpenter. Harry died on May 4, 1975, in Salt Lake City, Utah, at the age of 87.

Collection includes letters written to Sarah "Sadie" Smith from Harry G. Greaves from 1917 to 1919, while he was serving in the United States Army during the First World War. Also includes one French souvenir handkerchief commemorating the end of the War, and five copies of photographs of Harry Greaves and Sarah Smith Greaves.
