Biographical History

Alex B. Darais (1918-2007) was an art professor in Utah.

Alexander Basil Darais was born April 4, 1918 in Venice, California. He married Norma Louise Johnson on June 13, 1945 in Salt Lake City, Utah. He earned a Bachelor of Arts from Brigham Young University (BYU) and a Master of Fine Arts from Pomona Associated College. In 1953, after having completed his master's degree, he returned to BYU as a professor of art. In approximately 1971, he was asked to design a new flag for BYU. He died August 13, 2007 in Provo, Utah.

Scope and Contents Two identical flag prototypes for Brigham Young University, based on a design developed by faculty member Alex Darais. The flag is composed of two horizontal stripes. The top stripe, which was originally royal blue but has now faded to purple, has five horizontal lines embroidered in gold to suggest a beehive and the words "The glory of God is intelligence" embroidered in gold around the top of the beehive. The bottom stripe, which is white, has block letters "BYU" embroidered in royal blue....
