Biographical History

James W. Bee (1913-1996) was a zoologist and naturalist.

James William Bee was born on September 25, 1913 in Provo, Utah to Robert G. and Mary Culbertson Bee. He enrolled at Brigham Young University (BYU) in 1932 and graduated with a B.A. in 1937. He returned to BYU to pursue an M.A., but his studies were interrupted by World War II. James served in the Armed Forces from 1941 to 1946. While serving in the Armed Forces, he met Annette P. Malseed and they were married October 15, 1945 in China. They had three children. After the war, James returned to BYU and graduated with his M.A. in 1947. In 1948, he entered the University of Kansas (KU) to continue his research. He retired 37 years later and moved to Washington state. Throughout his career, he was a well-known zoologist and field researcher, donating many specimens to both BYU and KU. He died April 18, 1996, in Seattle, Washington.

Contains photographic slides and photocopies of James W. Bee's journals documenting his work, travel, and research as a naturalist and a zoologist in Utah, Kansas, Washington, and other places around the world. These include observations of nature, including of plants and animals. The journals also include some photographs and drawings to illustrate James W. Bee's writing. Some slides depict Bee's personal and family life. Dated approximately 1927 to 1995.
