Biographical History

Francis Waring Robinson (1905-1985) was born on January 13, 1907 to James Johnson Robinson (1863-1946) and Anna Waring (1869-1958) in Lakeville, Connecticut. Francis Robinson’s educational background was varied and extensive. He attended the Hotchkiss School for boys, a prep school in Connecticut, where his father taught. He received his bachelor's and master's degree of Fine Art from Princeton University and Harvard in 1929 and 1933. He travelled to Europe on two summer fellowships, studying at the Sorbonne in Paris [1931 and 1932] and learning German in Germany [1930]. His educational experiences were enriched by extensive travel in Europe from 1924 to 1966. Robinson In 1939, Robinson joined the Detroit Institute of Arts after having worked at the Boston Museum of Fine Arts and the Cincinnati Museum. On May 26, 1971, Francis Robinson married the widow Margaret Fuller Matheson (1909-deceased). Robinson has approximately 26 works in 44 publications in 2 languages and 161 library holdings. On December 18, 1985 in Grosse Point, Michigan, he died.
