Biographical History

James Cragun (1814-1887) was a farmer, soldier, and pioneer of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

James Cragun was born on July 26, 1814 in Connersville, Indiana to parents Elisha and Mary Osborne. He married Eleanor Lane on March 30, 1837 in Boone, Indiana, and they raised eight children together. After his marriage, Cragun lived in Eagle Village until relocating to North Field in 1842. It was there that Cragun met the missionaries and was baptized into the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints on April 13, 1843. Moving west with pioneers, Cragun and his family traveled to the Salt Lake Valley in 1849. There, he was an early settler of Millcreek, Utah. In 1851, he was ordained as an Apostle of the Seventies. During the Civil War, Cragun fought as a private in the Union Army. In 1863, he moved to St. George, Utah and worked as a farmer. He later fought in the Utah Indian Wars of 1866.

James Cragun died on February 13, 1887 in St. George, Utah.
