Biographical History

Richard Lloyd Anderson (1926-2018) was a developer of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints's standardized gospel teaching plan. He was also a professor of Early Christian History at Brigham Young University.

Richard Lloyd Anderson was born to Lloyd and Agnes Ricks Anderson in Salt Lake City in 1926. Because his father was an advertising executive, his family often travelled between Utah and Idaho. They lived Provo and Ogden in Utah as well as Pocatello, Idaho.

As a young man, he served in the US Naval Air Corps during World War II as a radioman. While in the Corps, he took a correspondence course from BYU on the New Testament. He also developed a standardized gospel-teaching plan which he would use while serving a mission in the Northwestern United States. This plan, which led to the conversion of over a thousand of people in the mission per year, was later used by Gordon B. Hinckley as the foundation for teaching throughout all of the missions of the Church. Anderson was called by Hinckley to help develop it.

After finishing his development of the Church's gospel-teaching plan, Anderson decided to attend Weber College in 1949. However, after one semester, he was requested by Brigham Young University Professors Hugh Nibley and Sidney B. Sperry to attend BYU. There, he studied Early Church History, Greek, and Latin under those professors. While there, he married Carma de Jong, the daughter of BYU's College of Fine Arts professor Gerrit de Jong, Jr.

Shortly after their marriage, Richard and Carma soon moved to Massachusetts for Richard to pursue his post-Graduate studies. He received his Juris Doctor from Harvard the Law School in 1951. He then attended the University of California in Berkley and earned his receive a Masters and PhD in Greek studies. In 1964 the couple returned to Provo, where Anderson worked as a professor at Brigham Young University, while also writing on topics ranging from early history of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints to the New Testament.

Anderson passed away on August 12, 2018.
