John Gibbs Smith (1883-1948) was a police officer and the great-grandson of Hyrum Smith, primarily in Salt Lake City, Utah.

John Gibbs Smith was born on September 1, 1883 in Brigham City, Utah to Hyrum Fischer Smith and Annie Hannah Maria Gibbs. He grew up mainly in Hoytsville, Utah, the third of nine children. He had minimal formal education, after graduating from school in Hoytsville, he attend Brigham Young Academy befire being expelled.

The Smith family moved to Provo, Utah in 1901. John Gibbs Smith married Martha Sophia Robey on March 27, 1903, but the couple divorced in August of the same year, following the birth of Martha's son with another man. John worked as an electrician for the next ten years. On May 10, 1909 Smith married Hannah Johnson in Provo, Utah. The couple had one daughter together, but Hannah died in childbirth. In 1912, Smith married Aretta Elvira Francum on March 12, 1912. The couple had three children together, and moved to Los Angeles, California where they lived until 1914. That year, the Smith family moved to Salt Lake City, where John worked at the Salt Lake City Police department until his retirement in 1936. John retired to Pasadena, California, where he died on September 28, 1948.
