Biographical History

Vilate Elliott (1868-1946) was an elementary school teacher and home economics professor in Utah.

Margaret Vilate Elliott was born to Fannie Ainger Peck and Edwin Elliott in Provo, Utah on April 22, 1868. She was raised in Provo, and was sealed to Joseph Edmund Smoot after his death in 1890. She then returned to school, and attended Brigham Young Academy before graduating with a bachelor's in Pedagogy in 1895. After graduating, she began her education career teaching in the small southeastern town of Bluff, Utah as an elementary teacher. After 1900, she then taught for a year at Parker School in Provo where, after finishing, she was called to serve a mission in England in 1902.

After returning from her mission to England in 1904, Elliott began expanding her teaching experience to college education. After spending four years teaching at the Franklin School, she attended the Pratt Institute in Brooklyn, New York, where she gained qualifications to teach as a professor of Home Economics in Textiles and Clothing at Brigham Young University--a job she held between 1908 to 1939. Before she retired, she not only helped out as a member of the Utah State Fair Board and Hostess to the New York World's Fair, but she also travelled all over the world--going to places like Honolulu, Hawaii and Copenhagen.

On June 30, 1946, Margaret Elliott passed away in Provo, Utah.
