Biographical History

John Joseph Hayes (1825-1899) was an Irish Latter-day Saint immigrant to the United States.

John Joseph Hayes was born to John and Jane Hayes Hayes 28 January 1825 in Clonakilty, Cork, Ireland. At age 20, John moved to London, England here he worked as a shoemaker. In London, Hayes met the Latter-Day saint missionaries, was baptized shortly thereafter and soon left on a 3 year preaching mission. Hayes married Rachael Ellen Eleanor Wagstaff on 22 February 1853, while on the sailing ship "Alvira Owen" headed to the United States. The couple eventually settled in Pleasant Grove, Utah, and together had six children; John Joseph, Eleanor Jane, Isaac John, George Samuel, William Lehi, and Rachel Sarah Emma. Hayes continued working as a shoemaker in Utah, as well as spending his free time writing poetry. John Joseph Hayes died 8 December 1899 in Pleasant Grove, Utah, Utah.

Scope and Contents

This includes a short 22 minute film about the John and Jane Hayes family, their conversion to the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, and immigration to the United States of America. Film includes four spoken word poems written by John Joseph Hayes, with a biographical introduction. Dated 2004.
