Biographical History

Edmund Lovell Ellsworth (1819-1893) was a lumberman, farmer, and pioneer for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in New York, Nauvoo, Utah, and Arizona.

Edmund Lovell Ellsworth was born on July 1, 1819 in Paris, New York to Jonathan Ellsworth and Sarah Galley. Ellsworth was baptized a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints on February 20, 1841 in New York and one year later in Nauvoo, Illinois he married Elizabeth Young on July 10. With Elizabeth, Ellsworth had eight children. He later became a member of the fourth quorum of the seventy and on his trek to Utah was the captain of the first handcart company.

In Salt Lake City, Utah, Ellsworth married Mary Ann Dudley on December 24, 1852 and had nine children with her. While living in Utah, in 1854 he was called as a missionary for the LDS church and served his mission in England. On October 10, 1856 in Salt Lake City, Utah, he married Mary Ann Bates and Mary Ann Jones. With Mary Ann Bates he had thirteen children and with Mary Ann Jones he had twelve children. All together, Ellsworth had four wives and forty-two children.

Later in his life while living in Arizona, Ellsworth was imprisoned for polygamy in June of 1885 in the Yuma Territorial Prison. On December 29, 1893, Ellsworth died in Showlow, Arizona.

Contains a flash drive with a digital copy of Ellsworth's journal giving an account of his service in England, a journal kept while in prison in Yuma, Arizona, for polygamy, and a brief autobiography. Also includes a digital copy of a short journal and life sketches recorded by Ellsworth's wife, Mary Ann Jones; various manuscripts, photographs and family portraits; a family bible; and Ellsworth Family Organization information. Materials date from 1856 to 1925.
