Biographical History

George Edward Percy Careless (1839-1932) was a prominent composer, conductor and member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

George Edward Percy Careless was born on September 24, 1839 in London, England. As a child he studied at the Royal Academy of London. He gained an interest in music and began performing as a youth.

In the early 1860's he joined the LDS church and in 1864 he immigrated to the United States, specifically Utah Territory. Before leaving England he married Lavenia Triplett. Shortly after arriving in Salt Lake, Careless began conducting the Tabernacle Choir at Temple Square as well as the Salt Lake Theatre orchestra. He also worked with the Salt Lake Opera Company.

In 1888, Careless married Jane Davis in Salt Lake City, Utah. He has contributed many musical pieces to the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and is still regarded as a great influence within the Church.

Careless passed away on March 5, 1932 in Salt Lake City, Utah where he is also buried.
