Gary D. Schmidt (1957- ) is an American author.

Gary Schmidt was born in 1957 in Hicksville, New York. He attended Gordon Collece where he began preparation to be lawyer. As a senior he switched to an English major and decided to go to graduate school.

Six years later, after earning a Master's Degree in English literature and a Ph.D. in medieval literature, he was hire at Calvin Collece as a progessor of English.

He and his wife Ann have six children. He currently resides with his family in their farmhouse where he writes. He has received a Newbery Honor and a Pritz Honor for his book "Lizzie Bright and the Buckminster Boy" and a Newbery Honor for "The Wednesday Wars."
