Biography

Phil Dalby (1919-2004) was an educator, composer, and cartoon artist.

John Philip Dalby was born on March 29, 1919, in Driggs, Idaho, to parents Cleon Ezra and Ethelwynne Griggs Dalby. He served as a missionary for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in the North Central States Mission from 1939 to 1941. He entered the Army soon after December 7, 1941, and graduated from the Army Music School in Virginia and was a Warrant Officer in the 707th AAF Band. He married Barbara Magnuson in 1944, in Spokane, Washington, and togher they had four children. Dalby drew the "Book of Mormon cartoon" series in the Church between 1947 and 1953. He graduated with a bachelor's degree from San Diego State University, a master's degree from the University of Utah, and a Ph.D. from the University of Oregon. He directed the band at Utah State Agricultural College (now Utah State University) in Logan, Utah, taught and served as college department head and president of two community colleges (Morton and Thornton Colleges in the Chicago area). He was director of the Dale Mabry Campus in Tampa, Florida. After he retired, Dalby and his wife, Barbara, served as missionaries at BYU-Hawaii.

Dalby died on April 30, 2004, in Salt Lake City, Utah.
