Biographical History

John Bray Maiben (1826-1910) was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and a pioneer who helped to settle Utah.

John Bray Maiben was born on June 16, 1826, in Brighton, England, to parents William and Catherine Williams Cater Maiben. He married Phebe Eleanor Richards on April 9, 1855, in St. Giles Criplgate, Landon, England; then her sister, Elizabeth Mary Richards on November 4, 1855, in Salt Lake City, Utah. Between the two wives, there were 5 children born, none of who lived very long. The family helped settle Manti, Utah, where they lived for the rest of their lives. John was the Sanpete County Superintendent of Schools, and very active in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, serving wherever he was needed. He served over 50 different offices both civil and eccelesiastical - many for long periods of time. Maiben survived both his wives, and died on March 10, 1910, in Manti, Utah.
