Biographical History

Carl Wunderle (1866-1944) was a prominent violinist from Germany who performed around the world as a soloist and as a member of several major symphonies. Later in his life he learned the viola d'amore which he also performed and lectured on until his retirement in 1941.

Carl Valentin Wunderle was born in Meleck, Germany on April 13, 1866. Showing talent on the violin from an early age, Wunderle performed throughout Europe with his siblings in a group they formed called the "Wunderkind" trio. He later studied violin with a man named Brückner at the Hochschule für Musik und Theater in Munich from 1880 to 1886. Afterwards he played with numerous European orchestras including the Exposition Orchestra in Munich, the Kurhaus Orchestra in Kissingen, the Meininger Court Orchestra, the Kurhaus Orchestra in Russia, the Exposition Orchestra in Vienna, and the Hans von Bülow Orchestra in Hamburg. In 1891 he studied with Josef Joachim at the Hochschule in Berlin.

In 1893 he traveled to the United States and continued to play as a member of the Chicago Symphony, the Pittsburgh Orchestra, and the Cincinnati Orchestra. He played both violin and viola and later learned the viola d'amore, which he also performed and lectured on. Wunderle retired in 1941 and died on February 16, 1944.
