Biographical History

Ellen Hancock Burns MacDuff (1812-1885) was a Pioneer for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints who emigrated from England to the United States, and walked across the country to Utah.

Ellen Hancock was born on June 19, 1812 in Chesterfield, England, to Joseph and Mary Jackson Hancock. She married Joseph Burns on March 20, 1831, who died while traveling for business and without ever seeing his unborn child, Charles Burnes (1831-1904). A few years later, on September 15, 1839, she married John Robertson MacDuff, and together had six more children, five of which lived to adulthood: Mary Ellen (1840-1906), Malcolm (1842-1881), Sarah Anna (1844-1918), Ada Alice (1850-1910), and Jane Rowan (1855-1928).

Ellen and her family joined the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, along with several of their extended family, and began the process of emigrating to the United States to join with the Saints. They sailed on the Geo. B. McClelland from England to Castle Gardens, New York; then they spent two weeks on a boat travelling to Winter Quarters; then 11 weeks to Salt Lake City with an ox train. After arriving in Utah, Ellen and her family settled in Bountiful, Utah, where the family began a business of making lime and mortar for all the building construction that was happening.

Ellen died on August 11, 1885, in Salt Lake City, Utah.
