Biographical History

Robert Kent Crookston (1943- ) is the associate director of the Brigham Young University Faculty Center. He is a plant biologist who served as the dean of Brigham Young University's College of Biology and Agriculture.

R. Kent Crookston was born on March 8, 1943 in Magrath, Alberta, Canada to parents Bryan Grant and Lisadore Brown Crookston. He served in New Zealand as a missionary. He married Gayle Loraine Jones on June 16, 1966, and together they have seven children. He received his BS in agronomy from Brigham Young University in 1968, then received a PhD in plant physiology from the University of Minnesota in 1972. He was a faculty member at the University of Minnesota from 1974 to 1998, and he was the head of the Department of Agronomy and Plant Genetics from 1990 to 1998. He was then the dean of Brigham Young University's College of Biology and Agriculture from 1998 to 2005, where he directed a re-invention of the college's teaching, research, and outreach programs. He now serves as Associate Director of the Brigham Young University Faculty Center.

His career has included a focus on outreach and service. He has consulted on agricultural development projects in Senegal, Niger, Rwanda, Nigeria, Mexico, and the Philippines. From 1998 to 2007, he co-directed a project to improve health and economy in a rural Moroccan region.
