Biographical History

Gladys Cox Hansen (1909-1979) was a civic and church leader in Utah.

Gladys Cox Hansen was born to Louis S. and Louisle Wintch Cox on March 25, 1909 in Manti, Utah. She was raised in Utah and attended school in Manti, Silver City, and Payson. In 1928, she married Oscar John Hansen and the married was later solemnized in the Salt Lake Temple. She served as Relief Society president and secretary in the church as well as serving as an organist for 48 years. In the 1930s, she helped organize the Goshen Ward Singing Mothers. She was an active member of the community and served as secretary of the state branch of the American Federation of Labor and Congress of Industrial Organization (AFL/CIO) as well as the chairwoman of the state Democratic Party. She died December 29, 1979 at her home in Provo, Utah.

Contains a 16 mm film from approximately 1956 of the Brigham Young University (BYU) Color Guard, a basketball game, and a cougar hunt led by Oscar John Hansen. The cougar caught was later donated to BYU for use as the mascot in 1956.
