Biographical History

Lillian Harmon Heil (1927-2023) is a former professor of elementary education at Brigham Young University and Brigham Young University Hawaii.

Lillian Harmon Heil was born on November 20, 1927, in Riverside, California to parents Frank Nelson Harmon and Lillian Esplin. She received a B.A. from Fresno State College in elementary education and music in 1950, an M.A. in elementary education from the University of Utah in 1960, and then completed a doctoral degree in curriculum and teaching at Teachers' College of Columbia University in New York City in 1968. While in New York she met Eugene Heil, whom she would marry on June 10, 1967, in the Saint George Utah Temple. He passed away a year later in an automobile accident. Lillian worked as an elementary school teacher for 13 years, then taught briefly at Queens College and BYU-Hawaii (1969-1974) before pursuing a career teaching children's literature at Brigham Young University from 1974 to the 1990s. She served on the BYU Children's Book Review, the Executive Board of the Children’s Literature Association of Utah, and as president of Delta Kappa Gamma. Lillian was also a member of the Utah Valley Chapter of the American Guild of Organists. She served missions for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Samoa from 1957 to 1959, and Jamaica from 1996 to 1997.

On March 5, 2023, Lillian passed away in Lindon, Utah.
