Biography

Giorgio Sommer (1834-1914) was a photographer in Naples, Italy.

Giorgio Sommer was born on September 2, 1834, Frankfurt am Main (modern-day Germany) to Georg Sommer and Anna Margaretha Gauff. Sommer studied business and opened his first photography studio in Switzerland. He relocated to Italy in 1857. He partnered with Edmond Behles (1841-1921) and opened studios in both Rome and Naples. Sommer's photography focused on Italy with Naples featuring predominantly. He exhibited extensively and earned numerous prizes and honors. Sommer was appointed official photographer to King Victor Emmanuel II of Italy. His partnership with Behles ended in 1874, after which Sommer opened four additional studios of his own. Sommer died on August 7, 1914, in Naples, Italy.
