Biography

Phillip Margetts (1829-1914) was a pioneer, a missionary for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, and a dramatist.

Phillip Margetts was born February 10, 1829 in Kineton, England to Thomas Margetts and Alice Aston Bishop Margetts. In about 1840, the family heard about the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints from missionaries. They were baptized soon thereafter. Phillip worked as a locomotive engineer for the London and North Western Railway until, in January 1850, he and his family (excepting his father, who died in 1842) immigrated to Salt Lake City, Utah. In Salt Lake, he met and married Elizabeth Bateman on November 5, 1850; they would go on to have 14 children. He worked as a blacksmith. He was also an active figure in Utah theater--he was in some of the first productions at the Old Bowery in 1851 and at the opening of the Salt Lake Theatre in 1862. He remained involved in the Utah theatrical scene, including a time as the manager of the Salt Lake Theatre. Phillip Margetts died September 1, 1914.
