Biographical History

Benjamin Franklin Woodward (1860-1939) was a miner in the Utah and Nevada mining districts.

Benjamin Franklin Woodward was born on September 7, 1860 in Spanish Fork, Utah, to James Woodward and Nancy McCurdy Koyle Woodward. He married Carolina Elmira Hales on January 10, 1883 in Spanish Fork, Utah. As a young man, he drove freight wagons between Utah and New Mexico, and later worked as a mason. He also built railroad culverts for the Denver and Rio Grande Western Railroad on the Tintic Mining District and Sanpete Valley lines.

Beginning in the 1890s, Woodward and his son, Benjamin Spencer Woodward, worked as miners in the Marysville, Tintic, and Nevada mining districts. A friend of John H. Koyle, the founder of the Relief Mine, Woodward both promoted and worked in the Relief Mine, and supported Koyle in his activities. Benjamin Woodward and Caroline Elmira Hales had eleven children: Nancy Mae Woodward, Milton Hales Woodward, Caroline Elmira Woodward, Georgia Woodward, Nancy Mae Woodward, Benjamin Spencer Woodward, Frank Leslie Woodward, Franklin Burton Woodward, Grant Gordon Woodward, Charles Sanford Woodward, and Ida Frances Woodward. Benjamin Woodward died February 16, 1939, in Salt Lake City, Utah.
