Apr. 13, 1807 at Windy Haugh near Alston, England; family migrated to Canada in 1817, settling in Little New York (Toronto); m. Mary Walton on June 25, 1829; lived ub Charleston Settlement, now Downsview, Ontario; worked as carpenter; Russell's sister, Isabella Russell Walton, baptized by Parly P. Pratt in 1836; Russell family baptized after hearing Pratt preach gospel in Dawson home; baptized with John Taylor, Joseph Fielding, and John Dawson; moved to Kirtland, Ohio; served in first mission to England from 1837-1839 with Heber C. Kimball, Orson Hyde, Joseph Fielding; John Goodson; and John Snider; moved to Far West, Mo. and on Apr. 26, 1839 Russell's family and relatives cut off from Church by Sidney Rigdon; remained in Far West after Saints left; imprisoned in Richmond Jail for contempt of court; sold as a slave for not denying his religion; freed by a Mr. Raglan, but only after Russell insisted that he work for Mr. Raglan in exchange; lived on Raglan's farm in Ray County, Mo. (Woodward Farm); contracted swamp fever while working in Crooked River Bottoms of Missouri River; d. Sept. 25, 1844)

Contains correspondence received by Russell during his missionary service in England between 1838 and 1839. Also includes a notarized statement by William Dawson from 1888 describing Russell's service in guiding immigrants to Far West, Missouri in 1838.
