Biography

Charles Shumway (1806-1898) was a member of the first group of members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints to enter the Salt Lake Valley on July 22, 1847. Charles and his family settled Shumway, Arizona.

Charles Shumway was born August 1, 1806 to Parley Shumway and Polly (Johnson) Shumway in Oxford, Massachusetts. Charles joined the Church of Jesus of Christ of Latter-Day Saitns in 1841 and moved to Nauvoo, Illinois where he helped build the Nauvoo temple and became a personal guard to the prophet Joseph Smith. Charles was assigned by Brigham Young to be in the first group to cross the Mississippi and enter the Salt Lake Valley on July 22, 1847. In the 1870s, Brigham Young asked Charles and group of men to settle south in Arizona. Charles Shumway had four wives and 35 children. He died on June 9, 1898 in Taylor, Arizona.

Handwritten and signed statement and dated 26 Oct. 1843. "Know all men by these presents that we Hyrum Smith, Charles Shumway, and Sidney Rigdon." They were appointed "conservator of the estate of Joel Bullard, judged insane."
