Biographical History

Elizabeth Ann Smith Whitney (1880-1882) was a Mormon woman in Utah. She served as a counselor in the initial organization of the Relief Society organization in Nauvoo, Illinois.

Elizabeth Ann Smith was born on December 26, 1800 in Derby, New Haven, Connecticut to Gibson Smith and Polly Bradley. Around 1818 she moved to Ohio, where she met and married Newel Kimball Whitney on October 20, 1822. Together they would have twelve children.

After her marriage she and her husband joined the Disciples of Christ, but in November 1830 was converted to the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. The family moved to Illinois during the winter of 1838-1839, rejoining the Saints in Nauvoo. There she served as a counselor in the initial organization of the Relief Society. In 1846 she and her family joined the exodus from Illinois, working their way to Salt Lake City, Utah in October 1848. She was widowed in 1850, and died in Salt Lake City on February 15, 1882.
