Biographical History

Howard T. Reid (1916-1998) was an academic administrator and counselor in Utah. He was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

Howard Tennant Reid was born on November 16, 1916 in Manti, Utah to John Carter Reid and Margaret Alice Tennant. He was raised in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Manti, and studied at Snow College in Ephraim, Utah following high school. In 1940 he completed a bachelor's degree in music and English from Brigham Young University.

In 1942 Reid enlisted in the United States Navy, and served as an officer for four years during World War II. Following the war he returned to Utah to marry Dorothy Jean Pederson. They had three children.

Reid then returned to his education, studying at the University of Southern California. He earned a master's degree in education in 1947, and an EdD in guidance counseling in 1949. After graduating he took a position as dean of men and professor of education at Colorado State College in Greeley, Colorado. In 1953 he joined the faculty of Brigham Young University, where he remained until his retirement in 1982. During his time at the university he served as acting director of the Summer School (1955-1958) and chairman of the Counseling Service (1955-1957).

Reid was active in the Church, and served in a number of leadership positions including district president, bishop, and high councilor.

He passed away on February 22, 1998 in Orem, Utah.
