Biographical History

R. Eugene Allen (1877-1967) was a banker and philanthropist in Utah.

Robert Eugene Allen was born on December 21, 1877 in Coalsville, Utah to Thomas L. Allen and Sarah Rankin McCarthy. He studied at the Summit Stake Academy, then at the Brigham Young Academy. After graduation he continued his business training at the Rochester Business College.

After completing his education he returned to Provo, Utah, where he taught at Brigham Young Academy for a few years. In 1902, he married Inez Knight, daughter of prominent businessman Jesse Knight. He was called in 1905 to serve a mission for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, returning in 1907.

Upon his return, Allen began working as secretary for the Knight Investment Company. He served in this role from 1907 to 1933, as well as manager of the Knight Power Company (1908-1912) and vice president of the Knight Trust and Savings Bank (1913-1931). In 1931, he became bank manager of the First Security Corporation, and continued in this position until his retirement in 1947.

Allen was involved in the community, and was a member of the Provo Chamber of Commerce, Metropolitan Water Board, Provo Kiwanis Club, and the Republican Party.

R. Eugene Allen passed away on April 27, 1967 in Provo, Utah.
